Lohan Charities

Practice in service • Giving what comes from the practice back to the world

The Lohan tradition has always understood that practice which stays only inside the practitioner is practice that has stopped halfway. The Komusō walked into the streets not because the streets were a stage, but because the world is where the practice has to eventually land. Lohan Charities is that landing — modest, quiet, and ongoing.

Money collected through shakuhachi takuhatsu and from handmade ceramic sales goes directly to support causes that ask little in return and give much: animals with no voice, oceans that cannot speak for themselves, people who need food, and the living systems we all depend on.

Where It Goes

Animal & Wildlife Rescue

Support for organizations working to rescue, rehabilitate, and protect animals — domestic and wild. Every creature that cannot advocate for itself has a claim on those of us who can.

Ocean Cleanup

Contributions toward efforts to remove plastic and waste from the ocean. The sea has given much to this practice — through sailing, through the coastal life of Osaka Bay — and deserves something given back.

Food Projects

Support for local and international initiatives addressing food insecurity. The first precept is to do no harm. Letting people go hungry when something can be done is its own kind of harm.

Environmental Projects

Contributions to broader environmental causes — reforestation, habitat protection, clean water. The Taoist thread in this practice has always understood that what happens to the natural world happens to us.

The flute is played, someone listens, something is offered. The ceramic is shaped, fired, given. What comes back goes out again to where it is needed. This is what practice looks like when it leaves the cushion.

Lohan Charities does not seek large donors or institutional partners. It operates at the scale of one person's practice — which means it is small, consistent, and without overhead. Those who wish to support any of these causes directly are encouraged to find and give to reputable organizations working in these areas.
